Add that personal touch to your email with the drop of a block, using Merge Tags created from details in the contacts database in your NewZapp account.
What are Merge Tags and how to use them
When you click inside a text block you'll see a Merge Tags drop down box at the top of the screen. You can use these tags to add in details from a contact card, including custom fields.
When an email is sent through NewZapp these tags will be replaced by the details within the contact card. As an example, below is an email that I've built ready to send out.
When this email gets sent out it will take the title, first name and last name of each contact I send it to, so when I send it myself I'll see this in my inbox.
What if we don't have these details on the contact card?
This is all well and good, but what if you want to send an email out with a these tags, but you know not every contact record in your account has their first name recorded? Will they see the tag in the email they receive?
Simply put, no. If you include a merge tag for a detail that is blank in the contact card then we'll remove that tag for that email. For example, using the same email, if my name was missing from my contact card the email I would receive would look like this.
Common mistakes and pitfalls
One thing we do see every now and then is a user will manually type out the merge tag and while there's nothing stopping you doing that, typing out incorrectly will backfire in your emails. The most common time we'll see this is when users type out [first Name] or [fistname], neither of which will work and the "tag" will show up in inboxes.
If you use the drop down box at the top the tag will definitely be correct and your email won't look like this.
The other thing to make sure you of is that your email will still make sense if the field is empty. This is most commonly seen at the beginning of the email. If you start your email with "Dear [firstname] [lastname]", but you don't have that information on the contacts card, the email they receive will look like this.
